ABK Biomedical

has engaged EnginuityMED to deliver engineering support for their OccluSystem delivery device. ABK are pioneering the use of radio-opaque embolic beads in the targeted treatment of tumors. Following early design in Ireland, ABK have brought core engineering to Halifax, in order to advance the device to production.

“Having access to unique creative engineering on our doorstep is key to meeting our investor expectations and delivering on our key business milestones” says Daniel Boyd, Chief Scientific Officer at ABK, adding “proximity is critical to rapid iteration, that’s what ABK needs as we move to the next phase.”

EnginuityMED are working on refining the device for use in OccluSystem’s preclinical trials, scheduled in early 2015. EnginuityMED will also undertake additional development and OccluSystem refinement for the first round of human testing later in 2015, preparing for a full commercial launch for the product.

EnginuityMED is a collaborative spin off from local mechanical engineering company Enginuity Inc. EnginuityMED successfully launched their FIVA ™ Fluid Intravenous Alerting device into the Canadian market earlier this year.

“We’re working hard to get the relevant regulatory approvals in place for EnginuityMED to provide value to ABK and the many other med tech players blossoming in the Maritimes” adds Ben Garvey, CEO of EnginuityMED Inc, based on Herring Cove Road in Halifax.

Dr Bob Abraham, ABK’s Chief Executive Officer sees the relationship as key to the successful launch of OccluSystem, adding “EnginuityMED have the right mix of skills, concise processes and personality to make the difference moving forwards.”

October 20, 2014 – Halifax, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

A new injection of support will assist Halifax’s EnginuityMED with the market launch of its Fluid IV Alert (FIVA) technology and the development of a second generation product.

FIVA is a battery-powered device that clips onto IV bags, monitors fluid levels and alerts medical professionals when the bag is empty. The product addresses a common problem in operating rooms, emergency rooms and ambulances. Approximately 30% of IV bags run out of fluid without clinicians noticing, posing risks to patients.

The idea was originally conceived by Dr. Orlando Hung, an active Anesthesiologist at Capital District Health Authority. Dr. Hung joined forces locally with two engineering and two business development experts to form EnginuityMED. Within just nine months, the team advanced FIVA from concept to first sale.

To maintain EnginuityMED’s momentum, the Government of Canada is providing a $150,000 repayable contribution to the company, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)’s Business Development Program (BDP).

EnginuityMED has used the support to develop product moulds and demo units which it will showcase at conferences and tradeshows. They are hiring a marketing manager to develop the brand and are now able to promote and sell FIVA online through an e-commerce enabled website (www.enginuitymed.com). The BDP project also enables the company to engage in trademarking and regulatory activities for FIVA to be marketed outside of Canada.

Additionally, ACOA’s support is assisting with the development of a second generation product. Urology professionals have approached EnginuityMED to develop a device with a larger capacity to monitor fluid provided to patients on urology wards. The company will hire two new research and development staff to design and develop the product.

“Our Government is pleased to support the market launch and continued growth of EnginuityMED’s innovative IV monitoring technology through the development of a second generation product. This small-but-mighty medical device, designed and manufactured locally, has the potential to improve patient care worldwide, while creating jobs and opportunities right here in Nova Scotia.”

Make the most of the season by following these simple guidelines

The new season is a great reason to make and keep resolutions. Whether it’s eating right or cleaning out the garage, here are some tips for making and keeping resolutions.

    Make a list

Lists are great ways to stay on track. Write down some big things you want to accomplish and some smaller things, too.

    Check the list regularly

Don’t forget to check in and see how you’re doing. Just because you don’t achieve the big goals right away doesn’t mean you’re not making progress.

    Reward yourself

When you succeed in achieving a goal, be it a big one or a small one, make sure to pat yourself on the back.

    Think positively

Positive thinking is a major factor in success. So instead of mulling over things that didn’t go quite right, remind yourself of things that did.
